What, When And How To Eat To Prevent Obesity

13% of the world’s adult population and 42 million children under the age of 5 are overweight or obese. Worldwide obesity more than doubled between 1980 and 2014. It is shocking to read WHOs report on obesity in today´s world. The good news is that we can prevent overweight. But the big question is, of course, how? Let´s see what acclaimed Tibetan Doctor Phuntsog Wangmo has to say about this…

Why Do We Become Overweight?

In the Tibetan Medicine & Modern Life Conference held in Tenerife, Spain, in March 2015, Tibetan Dr. Wangmo points out that the main reason for gaining weight is that our digestive fire does not work properly. According to her, rather than having to do with how much we eat, the reason lies in the efficiency of our digestive system: are we able to digest everything that needs to be digested? If the answer is no, this indicates that our digestion is not functioning as it should, and this often leads to obesity. Dr. Wangmo points out that eating heavy and raw foods and foods that are poor in nutrients forces the stomach to work a double-shift weakening the digestive processes. This, in turn, develops mucus that extends over the entire body killing the digestive fire, and ultimately leads to overweight. Let´s see how we can prevent this phenomenon and foster well-being.

10 Tips For Preventing Obesity By Dr. Phuntsog Wangmo

  1. Eat often but less quantity.
  2. Eat a light dinner.
  3. Your meal should consist of 1/3 food, 1/3 liquid and 1/3 air.
  4. Take a 5h break between every meal to give your digestive system a rest.
  5. Exercise! And if possible go on a short walk after each meal.
  6. Cook the food, avoid raw foods.
  7. Try to eat fresh food.
  8. Adding spices to your meals makes them lighter. Use cardamom or ginger in winter, saffron or turmeric in summer and autumn and clove in spring.
  9. Drink boiled water (lukewarm).
  10. Avoid eating too much wheat products, potato, sweets, dairy. Adding seeds to your bread will make it lighter and easier to digest.

For many it might seem difficult to cut down on raw foods such as salads, or to avoid dairy products and wheat, but believe me, if you do, you will feel lighter and filled with energy in no-time!

    thanks for sharing these tips. I have had a gluten and dairy free diet for a few years now and it has made s world of difference to my digestive system. I no longer get tired after eating or painful cramps or bloating and on occasion when I do, I can tell immediately what has caused it simply by being aware of how all food affects my body. I have found by building an innate awareness of what feels supportive for my body vs what may be comfort food goes a long way in helping me to make the right choices for my body with food.

Yes definitely, being aware of our body and how it reacts to different foods is crucial in order to find a diet that best suits our constitution, as well as our lifestyle. Many times, what might be considered healthy for one person, might not be that for another one..because we all are unique and need different foods and different eating habits in order to stay well.     WOW! always thought I had to eat more Salads to lose weight, but as these don’t fill me, I prefer to eat vegetables with some protein…So I will be adopting the Ten Rules to my lifestyle asap.
    And hope to lose some weight….I only became overweight, after a very bad illness, and have found it difficult to lose this weight since that day. Never every being Overweight in my Life before, has made it harder for me to come to terms with being overweight.

      Hi Jennifer! Yes I was also eating a lot of salads before, thinking that it was the most healthy thing there is…But of course one thing is healthy as in non-fat, and another thing is healthy as in nutritious. During the last years, adopting a more balanced diet following Tibetan Medicine, Ayurveda, and other healing systems that give a lot of importance to diet, I have learned to choose foods that are nutritious, easily digestible, and provide me with energy for several hours…I´m glad to hear that you are willing to try these tips…do let us know how it´s going 🙂 Have a great day ahead!
