Misconceptions Of Meditation
Meditation is one of the best investments for your life because it leads you to discover wisdom, love, the capacity of self-healing, self-control and many other physical, mental, emotional and spiritual benefits. The best part is that you just have to search within yourself, this means that it is free, does not requires any equipment, has no counter-indications and can be practiced anywhere, anytime and by anyone.
Many people associate meditation with mysticism, religion, or esotericism, and believe that they have to become a guru and live in asceticism in order to practice meditation. Nothing could be further from the truth, unless Oprah Winfrey, Jerry Seinfeld, Steve Jobs or Clint Eastwood could be considered the new ascetics of the 21st century. Well ok, Steve maybe was….bad example.
Moreover there is the misconception that meditation requires many years of study and hard work, so many people give up before even trying. Obviously, the more you practice a sport, the better you become, and the same goes for meditation. However, as in any sport, you can enjoy the results from the first day.
Many people have the idea that you must be surrounded by absolute silence, sitting in the lotus position, staring at a certain point for hours, and yes, this is one of the thousand types of meditations, but there are many others. Many beginners complain about back and leg pain while meditating in the lotus position, and I always recommend them to start little by little, lying on the floor or sitting in a comfortable chair. When you start going to the gym, you do not run 3 hours the first day, right? You start with 15 minutes, then 30, and progressively and according to your needs and objectives you will increase your target. With meditation it is similar, and it is recommended to practice it progressively. As the saying goes, practice makes perfect.
Choose Your Meditation Practice
For people who feel restless and uncomfortable remaining in the same posture for a long time can choose to do other types of meditation, like Taichi, Qigong, dance meditation, etc. Those who do not like to be surrounded by silence, can try to recite mantras, sing harmonics or play the singing bowls.
As you can see, there are many excuses to avoid practicing meditation, but no real reasons. There is a big variety of meditations and you should choose the one that fits you best. So why not start tomorrow? Or better yet, Why not start today!!!
