Massaging with the feet? Yes, it might sound strange, but it is actually a massage technique that has been used especially in South India amongst those practicing the ancient martial art Kalari Payattu. In this post we give you a brief introduction to the Marma Kalari massage that is becoming more and more popular also outside of the Indian borders.
ANCIENT MASSAGE FROM KERALA, INDIA
This ancient technique, in which the massage is carried out with the feet, originates in the state of Kerala in South India. Formerly, it was practiced only by fighters and warriors and practitioners of the martial art Kalari Payattu, (that is why it is called Marma Kalari massage) but with time, this massage technique has spread and is being practiced also by massage therapists, doctors, etc.
MARMA KALARI MASSAGE: THE AYURVEDIC SPORTS MASSAGE
The Marma Kalari massage is vigorous, requires a higher degree of control as well as practice, and covers extensive parts of the body. If we try to compare it with any Western type of massage, with due respect to the obvious differences, we could say that it is the traditional sport massage for Ayurveda and Kalari practitioners.
DERIVES FROM AYURVEDA
The Marma Kalari massage has the same theoretic foundation as Ayurveda, therefore the study of the constitution of each recipient, as well as the mastery of the basics of anatomy and energy, are important when learning to apply the massage.
