What is Abhyanga?
The Abhyanga massage is one of the most popular massage techniques in India. It originates in the Ayurvedic medicine and its purpose is to harmonize the body, mind and spirit in order to create a state of balance and health. The massage can be performed by one or two therapists, who apply specific massage strokes on the entire body using Ayurvedic oils. In the Abhyanga massage the oil has a very important role, as it is chosen according to the client´s bodily constitution, and serves a specific purpose. In fact, traditionally, Abhyanga referred to the act of applying oil on the body before taking a bath, a kind of self-massage. But in the last decades it has developed to a massage modality that is recognized and performed all around the world.
Indications for the Abhyanga massage
The great thing with the Abhyanga is that it can be applied on all healthy individuals. Only the frequency of the massage varies depending on the bodily constitution of the client. So while some clients benefit from daily Abhyanga massage sessions, others might need some days in between the treatments. There are, however, conditions for which the Abhyanga massage is especially indicated. Maybe you can already think of some of your clients, family of friends that could benefit from it?
The Abhyanga massage is especially recommended for people suffering from:
- SKIN: skin flaccidity, stretch marks, wrinkles…
- CIRCULATION: cellulite, fluid retention…
- MUSCLES: muscle flaccidity, lack of muscle agility, contractured muscles…
- NERVOUS SYSTEM: mental stress, physical pain, fibromyalgia, insomnia…
- DIGESTION: constipation, obesity, fluid retention…
- GENERAL: lack of vitality, stress, joint stiffness…
